ESI AND THE ‘BIG FIVE’.
There is nothing more African than Africa's ‘BIG FIVE’. At ESI we use the ‘BIG FIVE’ theme throughout our service offering to our clients, culminating in a shortlist of the BIG FIVE candidates. The ‘BIG FIVE’ animals of Africa is so much part of what Africa represents that it is even depicted on the South African Bank notes.
The term ‘BIG FIVE’ refers to five of Africa's greatest wild animals – the Rhino, Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard. They are called the ‘BIG FIVE’, not only because they are all large wild animals, but because they were prime trophies for hunters (and unfortunately still are) because they are difficult to spot in the wild and they are extremely dangerous.
The ‘BIG FIVE’, ESI and conservation
Executive Search Consultants are often referred to as Head Hunters. We do not mind that but we do feel very strongly about wild life conservation and certainly do not promote the hunting of wild animals and particularly not the ‘BIG FIVE’. In fact we support organisations like “Save the Rhino” and the “WWF”.
Unlike the hunters of the past who focused on killing the ‘BIG FIVE’, we believe we should focus on conservation of the BIG FIVE. By conserving the ‘BIG FIVE’, the peoples of Africa, visitors to our special continent and our future generations will be able to “spot” the ‘BIG FIVE’ in its natural habitat.
Spotting candidates with the right fit for a specific role in a specific environment and then presenting them to our client in the form of a ‘BIG FIVE’ shortlist is what we do – and we do that well… but differently.
The ‘BIG FIVE’ theme is very much part of who we are, what we do and how we differentiate ourselves from the pack…
The Rhinoceros
The Rhinoceros is a large thick skinned herbivore with one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge.
Rhinos are listed as critically endangered as they are killed by hunters for their horns which are wrongly believed by some to act as aphrodisiac.
The African Elephant
The African Elephant is a very large herbivore with thick almost hairless skin. The upper incisors of the Elephant form long curved tusks of ivory.
The African Elephant is difficult to hunt because despite its large size, they hide in tall vegetation and are more likely to charge than other species.
The Lion
The Lion is a large carnivorous feline with a short tawny coat and a tufted tail. Males have magnificent heavy manes around their neck and shoulders.
They are considered by many the best of the BIG FIVE because of the danger involved in hunting them. In the wild, Lions normally hide in tall grass and they attack without any warning.
The African Buffalo
The African Buffalo is a large, horned bovid.
Buffalo are considered by many as the most dangerous of the BIG FIVE because of the number of hunter deaths caused by them. Wounded Buffalo are known to ambush and attack hunters.
The Leopard
The Leopard is a large carnivorous feline with tawny fur with dark rosetto like markings.
Leopards are very difficult to spot as they have nocturnal feeding habits and a secretive nature. They are wary of humans and might take flight in face of danger but will attack humans when hungry or threatened.
